SUMMER 2010 LEARNING CAMPS

 

Soar into success this summer!  Wells Academic Solutions has provided individualized tutoring programs for over ten years.  This summer, Wells will continue to provide one-on-one academic tutoring in all content areas in addition to ISEE & SAT test prep.  We will also continue to offer our reading program, Wells Book Pals.  To further support our clients’ needs, we’re excited to offer summer learning camps for small groups.  Our 90-minute structure and convenient scheduling will keep young minds and hands engaged.  All camps run from Monday to Thursday for 1.5 hour long sessions.

Deborah Fox, founder of Fox College Funding, LLC, has agreed to come to Wells to present a workshop for our students who are preparing to enter college. Come to this workshop to learn how to improve your odds of receiving private scholarships and how to position your family for filing for financial aid. Deborah is one of the nation’s leading college funding experts, so this is a rare treat! Don’t miss it! The workshop is two hours long. Please R.S.V.P. by May 20.

Advanced Study Skills (Grades 9-12)

Who: students and parents

Taught by owner Jared Wells, this workshop will focus on problem-solving, note-taking, fact recall, and other effective learning strategies. This is valuable for students who are beginning high school or are eager to improve build upon their current study skills. Also, parents will learn what they can do to support their student while still giving them enough room to take responsibility for their own learning. The workshop is two hours long.

            This workshop will be offered:

Thriving in High School Math (Grades 9-12)

Who: students

High school math is intimidating and overwhelming for many students, but it does not have to be! In this workshop, Jared Wells will provide tools that can be used to reduce mathematics anxiety and improve academic performance. The workshop is one hour long. Please R.S.V.P. by August 10.

Planning Ahead for the AP European History and AP U.S. History Exams (Grades 10-11)

Who: students

Students in AP history classes sometimes wait until the end of the year to start cramming for the test. Rather than waiting until the last minute, this class will teach you how to prepare throughout the year, while you learn. Taught by Ji Song, It will include instruction in history study skills, fact recall, and test preparation. The workshop is one hour long. Please R.S.V.P. by August 12

Preparing for College: High School A-G Requirements, College Counseling, and Entrance Exams (Grades 11-12)

Who: students and parents

Students who know what to expect and how to navigate the college application process often find it a rewarding experience. Come to this workshop, led by experienced college counselor Art Northrop, and learn how to navigate the college preparation process successfully. Art will discuss high school requirements, entrance exams, the application process, and college counseling. This is a 90 minute workshop.

            This workshop will be offered:

Additionally, parents will learn about how they can best support their students while still encouraging them to take responsibility for their own learning. The workshop is two hours long. Preparing for the ISEE (Grades 4-8)

Who: students and parents

This workshop provides an opportunity for students and parents to learn many of the tools we teach in our ISEE preparation program here at Wells. This workshop will teach students how to improve their likelihood of scoring high on the ISEE exam. They will learn about pacing, strategic guessing, and prioritizing questions. The students will also learn efficient methods of increasing their vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and mathematics scores. Parents will learn about their role in the test preparation process and what they can do to help. The workshop is two hours long. Please R.S.V.P. by July 26.

Early Literacy: What Parents Can Do for Emergent Readers and Writers (Grades Pre-K –1)

Who: parents

This workshop is designed for parents of young children who are learning to read and write. Parents will learn about the beginning stages of literacy, what to expect of their children during the first few years, and what they can do to help their students grow into strong readers and writers. Please R.S.V.P. by June 8.

            This workshop will be offered:

·       June 15, 2010 (6:30-7:30 PM, immediately following the math workshop)

·       July 7, 2010 (6:30-7:30 PM)

 

Elementary Mathematics: Laying a Positive Groundwork (Grades 2-4)

Who: parents

Basic math concepts provide the foundation on which the rest of a student’s mathematical understandings are built. Unfortunately, many students get off to a rough start and develop a lifelong, negative relationship with math. This workshop is designed to inform parents about what they should expect as their student navigates his or her way through elementary math. Parents will also learn strategies they can use to help their student gain deep, conceptual understandings of math concepts and develop strong, positive attitudes towards mathematics. The workshop is one hour long. Please R.S.V.P. by June 7.

SUMMER 2010 LEARNING CAMPS

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:  $150 per course (Four 1.5 hour sessions)

Getting Ready for Literacy (Grades PreK-K):  This hands-on and literacy-rich camp focuses on phonemic awareness, pre-reading, and pre-writing skills.  Some pre-writing activities from Handwriting Without TearsÒ will be taught.

                  This camp will be offered:

·       June 28-July 1:  10:00-11:30

·       July 19-July 22: 12:30-2:00

·       August 16-August 19:  10:00-11:30

 

Literacy Toolbox (Grades K-1):  This camp is designed for emergent readers and writers.  Students will build on their skills and sharpen their “tools” for reading, writing, and spelling though reading comprehension activities, literature response, and sight word practice.  Students will also work on advanced levels of phonemic awareness and phonics.

                  This camp will be offered:

·       July 19-July 22: 10:00-11:30

·       August 16-August 19:  12:30-2:00

 

Multiplication Facts Boot Camp (Grades 2-4):   This camp focuses specifically on the memorization of multiplication facts, which are needed for division and higher level math functioning.  The students will be drilled, timed, and pumped full of multiplication games.  The objective is to memorize times tables from 2-12. 

                  This camp will be offered:

·       July 19-July 22: 3:00-4:30

·       July 26-July 29:  4:30-6:00

 

Advanced Study Skills (5-8):  This camp is specifically designed for students transitioning into middle school, by targeting study skills and organizational techniques for success in the years ahead.  This course includes mini-lessons on note-taking, study skills, time management, and problem-solving.  The objective is to prepare students to confidently meet the higher demands of middle school.  Class also includes a Q & A session with experienced middle school students. 

                  This camp will be offered:

·       July 19-July 22: 4:30-6:00

·       July 26-July29:  3:00-4:30

 

Summer Camp Instructor Bios:

Alane Gernon-Paulsen, MA:  Alane is a credentialed Reading Specialist with a MA in Reading and Language Arts. She is currently working on a certificate in Educational Therapy and is also trained in Handwriting Without TearsÒ.

Christa Crawford:  Christa has a B.A. in jazz studies from UNT and a teaching credential from SDSU.  She is currently working on her master’s degree in education from SDSU while teaching music at Rosa Parks Elementary School.
