Reading

Reading is the gateway to learning. When students have weaknesses in phonological awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, or fluency, their ability to excel in any subject matter is severely hampered. Developing a strong foundation in reading early on sets children on a path for success in academic life, as well as personal and professional fulfillment.

In a typical hour-long session, students will perform exercises that appeal to their visual, tactile, and kinesthetic intelligences. We vary activities to keep students actively engaged and promote long-term memory development.

Early Reading
Our reading program begins with a diagnostic assessment to determine the specific causes of reading difficulty and appropriate level of instruction. Then, our instructors work with students one-on-one to build phonics and vocabulary skills, increase fluency and develop comprehension.

Advanced Comprehension
As students approach the middle grades, they face increased demands to process, understand, and summarize more advanced texts. We provide students with interesting non-fiction material and teach them strategies to find main ideas. These skills set our students up to excel in middle school years and beyond.
