Wells Summer Programs

Soar into Success this Summer! Wells Academic Solutions has provided individualized tutoring programs for over ten years. This summer, Wells will continue to provide one-on-one academic tutoring (reading, writing, math, etc.) and ISEE & SAT test prep. We will also launch our new reading program, Wells Book Pals.

We’re also excited to offer specialized summer courses for small groups. Our 90-minute structure and convenient scheduling will keep young minds and hands engaged. Our one or two-week courses include: Wonders with Numbers, Critical Thinking in Math, Multiplication Boot Camp, Literacy Toolbox, Writers’ Club, Writers’ Workshop, Critical Reading, Study Skills, and Mad About Science. We also offer a month long Conversational Spanish course for all ages.

Our Fun Fridays will include a drop-in Arts & Crafts class and our free programs: a weekly Book Club for older, independent readers, a weekly Story Time for emergent readers, and monthly Community Spotlights.

The Wells Academics’ 7th-12th program will also offer courses for Algebra Review and Geometry and Pre-Calculus Previews.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: (8 sessions) unless otherwise noted***

WONDERS WITH NUMBERS (K-2): Students gain valuable practice with number concepts, computations, problem solving strategies, and fact memorization through interactive math games and real-world applications. There will be lots of hands-on activities to satisfy busy little hands.

CRITICAL THINKING IN MATH (4-6): Students focus on problem-solving and critical thinking skills in math through interactive math games and real-world applications. Students will gain more advanced strategies for solving word problems and employing higher math skills and concepts.

MULTIPLICATION FACTS BOOT CAMP (2-5): This course focuses specifically on the memorization of multiplication facts, which are needed for division and higher level math functioning. The students will be drilled, timed, and pumped full of multiplication games. The objective is to memorize times tables from 0-12.

LITERACY TOOLBOX (K-2): This course is designed for emergent readers and writers. Students will build on their skills, sharpening their “tools” for reading, writing, and spelling through reading comprehension and fluency activities, literature responses, word family activities, and sight word practice. Students will also work on their phonemic awareness by using hands-on activities.

WELLS WRITERS’ CLUB (3-6): Students will enjoy expressing themselves through a variety of genres and for a variety of purposes. Students will learn to organize their thoughts into logical paragraphs with clear introductions and conclusions. This course will provide students with an opportunity to practice their creative writing skills. It will be taught by Dr. Loh, a published children’s book author.

WELLS WRITERS’ WORKSHOPS (5-8) and (9-12): This course is designed for fluent writers who would like to learn more about craft. Students need to come to sessions with writing/manuscripts in process. Taught by Dr. Loh, students will follow an authentic workshop model and learn how to critique and how to shape one’s writing. This course meets on Fridays. Ideally, students need to come for at least three consecutive sessions.

CRITICAL READING (3-6): Students will learn the necessary skills needed to make the shift from learning to read and reading to learn. This course will introduce the students to high-interest and high-quality reading materials. They will focus on reading comprehension strategies, speed reading techniques, and effective methods for processing non-fiction texts.

STUDY SKILLS (5-8): This course is specifically designed for students transitioning into middle school, by targeting study skills and organizational techniques for success in the years ahead. This course includes mini-lessons on note-taking, study skills, time management, and problem-solving. The objective is to prepare students to confidently meet the higher demands of middle school. Class also includes a Q & A session with experienced middle school students. This is a one week course.

MAD ABOUT SCIENCE (1-3): This course will provide students with hands-on explorations of various scientific concepts. This is a one week course.

ARTS and CRAFTS (K-4): Students tap into their creativity by engaging in hands-on arts and crafts activities. Some possible topics include basic drawing, knitting, crocheting, weaving, etc.***This is a drop-in course; pay as you come. Call ahead to reserve your spot. You must sign-up each week.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAMS:

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH (3-6) and (7-Adults): Students will learn conversational Spanish. This course includes the basics in Spanish grammar. The focus will be on basic oral competencies, with reading and writing as supplementary by-products. Students will be taught basic phrases and be given opportunities to practice their language skills in an immersed environment. We will offer a session in the morning for grades 3-6 and a session in the afternoon for grades 7 and adults.

INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS (Scheduled at your convenience):

WELLS BOOK PALS (1-3): Following the research-based and award-winning one-on-one tutorial program model (“Book Buddies”), Wells will provide our students with support in literacy acquisition. Our tutors are trained to write individualized lesson plans for each session. Students will increase their reading fluency, word recognition, and reading comprehension. Students will participate in reading, writing, listening and speaking activities during their sessions.

ISEE TEST PREP: Get started on ISEE preparation for fall middle school applications. Our instructors work with students one-on-one to build their foundational skills, problem-solving abilities, and test-taking skills. (Call to schedule a diagnostic exam.)

ACADEMIC TUTORING: Experienced instructors work with students one-on-one to meet their individual needs in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, etc. These programs are designed to provide students with intensive tutoring in order to maintain, advance, and/or remediate their current skills. (Call to schedule a free consultation.)

FREE PROGRAMS:

WELLS BOOK CLUBS: Every Friday, Wells will sponsor a book club for independent readers. Students will be reading chapter books geared toward grades 3-8. Please see calendar for titles and sign up. Students and parents are invited to read the book independently and come to Wells for a discussion. Wells will provide parents with a resource guide which will include activities and writing prompts for each book. Please RSVP each week. Free and open to the public. (One hour)

WELLS STORY TIME: Every Friday, Wells will sponsor a Story Time for emergent and/or beginner readers. We will read different stories each week, keep little hands busy with an activity related to the story, and provide a resource guide for parents. Please RSVP each week. Free and open to the public. (30 minutes)

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Once a month, Wells will sponsor an event highlighting a community member who has made the news and/or done something significant for our community. Please see calendar for more information. We encourage you to come meet and greet with our featured guests. Please RSVP. Free and open to the public. (One hour)
