Consultation and Testing 1hr
During the first session our counselor and student will discuss the students' background, life experiences, academics, family relationships (what mom and dad studied in school/do for a living, etc.) A comprehensive overview of the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is provided. Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs are administered.
Strong Interest Inventory 1hr
Results are processed and analyzed by the counselor before meeting with the student. The counselor and client (student) then review the Strong Interest results together and determine the results of the test. (This process is critical in helping the student/client realize that they control the outcome of the answers and not vice versa). We pull out between 3 and 5 possible occupations/areas of interest for the student research online on the O*NET website. This site is maintained by the Dept of Labor Statistics site regarding the nature of thousands of jobs with extensive information for further analysis and research to be done on the student.
Review Myers Briggs 1hr
Review the previous week's results of the SII and discuss what research/homework the student took initiative doing regarding career research/information gathering. (How much or how little the student does outside of counseling time is a strong indicator of internal motivation/self initiative). The MBTI categorizes people into 16 different types and is very helpful in providing the student insight into themselves as well as others that are very close to them. The MBTI also is beneficial to the student in understanding the basis for which most high school curriculum is taught versus college curriculum. This further allows the student to look at their academic career more systemically and from the outside looking in. Multiple handouts and assigned reading regarding the students' "personality type" are provided and essential that the student regard between weeks 3 and 4.
Overview – Goal Setting – Resume writing – Internship introduction 1hr
Review the results of the MBTI in combination with the Strong test results. Counselor answers questions and works with student in any number of areas depending upon the student's individual needs. Session includes discussing the student's values (what is important to them) along with an outline of both short and long term goals, create a resume and look at possible places for internships and possible places of employment.
Have student fill out a goals affirmation sheet. Mail it to the student 3 months later from the date of our last session.
3 month follow up 30min:
Along with receiving goals sheet that student wrote to themselves 3 months earlier, make a follow up appointment to see what they learned about themselves and the world around them during that time. Review and provide further assistance as needed.
9 month following, 30min:
Check in with student to confirm goals set. Accomplishing to-do list and gaining experience in their area(s) of interest. This will greatly assist them in applying to colleges and later in life. Knowing oneself and the work of work are simply essential for success in life.
Student should be well on their way academically (choosing the right size school, with majors that reflect their areas of interest.)
