WHY CHOOSE OUR TEST PREP?

Choose Wells Academic Solutions if you want more out of a test preparation program. As a world-wide educational leader and consultant, I've had a unique view of the test preparation industry. The sad fact is that while test preparation has been around for many decades, the pedagogical approach has remained basically unchanged. The barrier to entry into test preparation is very low and most programs fail to understand the root cause of students' challenges. Most instructors are inadequately trained, leading to practices that do more harm than good. If you want more for your child's education and more out of a test preparation program, then take the time to learn more by by reading about our Meta-Cognitive and Meta-Socratic approach. Jared Wells

Hi, my name is Jared Wells, founder of Wells Academic Solutions and a native San Diegan. I am married to my  beautiful wife Stephanie, an award-winning jewelry designer.  I have been an educator since 1994, and I love working with students of all ages. My interest in education was developed at a young age. I was heavily influenced by the teachings of Dr. Thomas Gordon, author of Parent Effectiveness Training and Teacher Effectiveness Training, as my mother was an associate of Dr. Gordon's in the seventies. Better communication through effective listening is the core principle I learned by spending my summers at the Effectiveness Training headquarters in Solana Beach. In my late teens I took a peer counseling class, and went on to teach the class as a co-leader for several years. Over this time I developed a youth peer counseling group called R Club. R Club was established to help young people learn how to become effective listeners and how to provide better support for their peers. While I was attending the University of California at San Diego, I continued to pursue my interest in counseling by working as a Residential Supervisor at Oz San Diego, an in-house counseling center for teens 12-17 years old. I was responsible for group counseling sessions, the supervision of up to nine resident teens, and communicating with the clinical staff in the implementing of treatment plans. After Oz San Diego I was hired by La Jolla High School to work with students who were struggling in math. At this time I also began taking on private math students. To my surprise, I found that the depth of the relationships through tutoring was similar to the depth of relationships I had developed through counseling. Many students who struggle in school develop negative self-perception of their intelligence. As a tutor, I saw it as my job to understand students' unique challenges and help them turn those challenges into opportunities for growth.  I believes that with the right help, most students can turn around negative self-perceptions and learn to appreciate their true intelligence; improved test scores and grades follow. I opened Wells Academic Solutions in 1994, which has been running strong ever since. In 1999 I left Wells Academics in capable hands as I joined Larry Rosenstock as a founding member of the High Tech High Charter School network.  As Director of Assessment I worked with the country's leading education reformers at institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley.  In 2003 I returned to Wells Academics and began work on developing technology to improve administrative efficiency and communication between instructors, administration, and parents.  By working with a coalition of the country's top education companies, I co-developed an on-line system that became the basis for LearnSpeed.com. LearnSpeed launched it's first product in 2006 and now helps leading education companies around the world to increase administrative efficiency and improve the overall quality of their educational services.    In addition to proving SaaS (Software as a Service), I also consult with education company owners and license Wells Academic Solutions' educational programs.  I feel very fortunate to work with such an incredible group of professional teachers, program developers, center owners, and partners. I love my work, and I look forward to continuing to find ways to make a bigger impact in parents' and students' lives. Jared Wells

An Intelligent Approach

Engagement

We know that going through the motions won’t get it done. Our first task is to help students to take personal ownership of their preparation. We mentor each student to help them see how the SAT and ACT represent great opportunities for learning.

Engagement

Students generally have a negative view of college entrance exams because they have bought into the message that these tests are only about knowing how to take tests. Students sees little value in a test preparation program other than earning a higher score. Most programs support this view by claiming that they have the secret formulas and special test taking strategies. Unfortunately, these programs end up doing exactly the opposite of what should be done. The have students do practice problems and then have the instructor help them to solve the problems they answered incorrectly. This only increases the student’s confidence in the instructor’s ability to answer the questions correctly. Students remain uninspired, unmotivated, and passive. They fail to reach their goals. The results from two studies confirm this reporting that the national average for improvements after test preparation courses is only 15 points per section on the SAT and 1 point on the ACT. There is a much better way. At the core of our twenty years of success lies a much more inspiring message. “The learning that is required to meet and exceed your test preparation goals will directly help you succeed in college and beyond.” It is not surprising that research has shown that engagement and perception pay vital roles in deeper learning. [4]  At Wells Academics we help students to transform their perception of these exams from obligation to opportunity. You’d be amazed by what students are capable of when they are engaged and know how to properly leverage their intelligence.

Metacognitive

MetaCognition means thinking about one’s thinking. Strong improvement requires that students gain insight into their thinking process. This helps them to see where their thinking breaks down and how to make effective change.

MetaCognition

If we want to be effective in the world, we must understand how to use our minds effectively. An essential factor in becoming a more effective thinker is the ability to reflectively think about one’s thinking. Research has shown that students who are able to engage in metacognition perform better on many cognitive tasks[1] and solve problems more effectively than low-metacognitive students. [2] These skills are universal. The metacognitive processes that lead to effective reading and writing are the same metacognitive processes that lead to effective problem solving of math questions.[3]

Metasocratic

Knowing how to ask the right questions is the key to unlocking intelligence. A metaSocratic methodology supports students in developing and using questions like  sharp blades to cut through challenging problems. Far beyond test prep, these are tools for life.

MetaSocratic

"Did you ask any good questions today?" Richard Feynman, the creative genius physicists often compared to Einstein is quoted as saying that his parents never asked him about his grades, right answers on tests, or what he learned that day. Instead his parents asked him what good questions he asked that day.  Feynman attributes these questions to why he became a scientist. The same quote was attributed to Nobel Prize winner in physics Isidor I. Rabi.  "His excellence stemmed from asking good questions. And he is not alone in understanding that success is driven by asking good questions. A person in any profession where results matter (is there any other kind?) needs to cultivate the habit of asking good questions." [5] "If a [yearning for learning] is at the core of success in education and life, why do we seem to accord so little time and value to the process by which students, in collaboration with others (including ourselves), learn how develop better and better questions in their ongoing quest to understand themselves and our world." Bonstingl [6] There are few shortcuts that make much impact on the SAT or ACT.  That's why studies have shown that little improvement is gained after typical test preparation programs. [7]  The good news is that the core factors of intelligence based on cognition and questioning can be developed.  These factors do lead to significant results on the SAT and ACT.  The end result is that these strong gains in score improvement become the side note to students' better understand of the truth about their intelligence.  These students have the potential to become tomorrow's leaders.

WARNING: Most programs do not follow nor understand these essential teaching processes. They simply show students how to solve problems and rely too heavily on test taking strategies. ASSESS

Our assessment tools are used by top test preparation companies across the country. During each free consultation, we review the student’s diagnostic exam to help students and parents understand what it will take to reach the scores required by the schools the student is applying to.

ENGAGE

Younger students can easily get overwhelmed by the ISEE. We work with students to help reduce this stress and fear. We then mentor them in seeing the test as a fun challenge. As with our SAT students, the first task is to help students take personal ownership of their test preparation.

The ISEE can provide a wonderful excuse to upgrade Math and English foundations before the student moves on to more challenging work. At Wells Academics, our ISEE programs is as much about preparing for future learning as it is about test preparation.

APPLY

APPLY ~ Where assessment, engagement, and mastery meet. Despite teacher’s best intentions, students can become passive and learning can become rote. In order for students to score well on the ISEE, they must learn how to fully access and apply their intelligence. They must have a consistent approach to problem solving on which they can rely. As with our SAT and ACT preparation, our instructors foster the development of these essential skills through research based metacognitive and metasocratic approaches. These are the skills that are essential for lifelong learning.

PROGRAM DETAILS

One-on-one sessions with Wells Academics Master ISEE Instructors.
Students taking the Lower, Middle, and Upper level ISEE range from 4th to 9th grades. These students also range widely in their Math and English foundation. Given this reality, every ISEE program is customized to meet the individual needs of each student.

TUTORING

Our Approach

Our instructors' first priority is to help each student with his or her current classroom material. Improvement is often seen after only a few sessions.

Wells Academics instructors are trained to strengthen prior concepts while working with your student's current school curriculum. Through this process, holes and gaps in previous concepts are filled while keeping up with the current coursework.

We develop students' independent critical thinking, organization, and study skills, which will help them face future challenges in school and life.

EDUCATIONAL METHODOLOGY

METHOD

ALGORITHMIC

Direct teaching of the material.

SOCRATIC

Ask the student questions designed to help engage the mind.

META-SOCRATIC

Lead the student to forming their own questions designed to probe the material.

USE

Used when we first work
with a student or directly
before an exam.

Used after we have address immediate and pressing needs

Used once the student has developed a strong foundation and is maintaining a high level of performance.

PROS / CONS

Pro: Fast and effective. Reduces stress as material is presented in a straightforward easy to understand manner.

Con: Does not lead to independent thinking or problem solving ability.

Builds student's conceptual understanding of material. Student begins to develop independent critical thinking skills.

Knowing what questions to ask is the basis for independent investigation. All Wells Academics tutoring works towards this goal.

Summer Programs

Wells Academics 8-week Summer Programs

Starting the week of Monday, July 1st, Wells Academics Solutions will be offering a variety of summer courses. These courses will each be one hour per week in a small group setting (maximum 4 students).

Our offerings will include:

Summer Reading for AP English

Each week, students will be assigned a book recommended for AP English Language and/or Literature, with a daily reading schedule, and book log and writing prompt to complete. During the workshop, the book will be discussed, and the writing prompts will be workshopped in a small group setting. Great for students heading into AP English courses, as well as students who could use some support and guidance in getting some advanced reading and writing practice in over the summer. Your son or daughter will be the most well-read student on the block this summer!

Course objectives: Keep students in the habit of reading, learn and practice AP writing prompts, create a “portfolio” of literary knowledge they can draw upon for AP English (and other) writing prompts.

Course taught by James Wilson

Study Skills

“I’ve done my homework…now what?” This workshop is aimed at teaching students the techniques, skills, and mindsets that turn a student who gets their work done into a student who succeeds on exams. Great course for students who feel like they are putting in the effort into their classes, but aren’t seeing the results on the exams. Just doing homework is not enough: this workshop teaches students what more they need to and can do to succeed.

Course objectives: Motivate students to go beyond getting homework done, teach specific study skills they can apply in their classes, give them confidence going into tests.

Course taught by Vincent Perry

Getting Things Done (for Students)

Behind the academic difficulties many students have lie struggles with organization and planning. In this workshop, we’ll help students to create some BHAG (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals) for themselves for the summer, and teach them how to plan to make them happen. Each session we’ll cover planning techniques, and in a group setting discuss each student’s progress during the week, celebrating victories, and problem solving obstacles.

Course objectives: Create a planning habit, teach students how to most effectively use a planner and other planing tools, teach students problems solving skills, goal setting, and resiliency in the face of obstacles.

Course taught by Vincent Perry

English Grammar for the SAT/ACT

If there is one thing that is missing from most high school English curriculums, it is grammar and mechanics. Summer is the perfect time to get the English language foundation that students need to succeed on standardized tests, that they are not getting in school. Great for students doing SAT prep over the summer, as well as students who want to build their foundation before they begin test prep.

Course objectives: Build English grammar foundation for future writing courses and standardized testing.

Course taught by James Wilson

The price for each course (not including materials) will be $400. If your register and pay before June 15th, receive a $50 discount.
