As we saw in tip #1, math is one of the two fundamental languages that make all other learning possible. So, how do you make sure your child is getting the most out of their math education? Here are a few tips, broken down by grade level:
Grades K-5Elementary school children should be doing at least an hour of math every day, with at least 30 minutes of time spent working on problems. It’s also important to ensure that they’re being challenged without getting overwhelmed. Look for the sweet spot where your child has an opportunity for new learning each day without getting frustrated and dejected.
Middle to High SchoolTwice a week, have your child teach you what they are learning in class. This practice will help reinforce your child’s understanding of the material as teaching is one of the best ways to learn. You don’t have to know the material to be of help. Ask questions. Questions are the foundation of intelligence. By asking questions, you are modeling this important practice.
